Dr Martha Burns is an instructor of the Neuropathologies in Speech and Language doctoral program at the Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Adjunct Associate Professor at Northwestern University and the director of Scientific Learning Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SCIL) clinical specialist market. She is also an elected Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Dr. Burns has received honors from Northwestern University, Evanston Hospital Corporation, the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation and St. Xavier University.

Workshop Outline
9:00 am – 10:45 am Introduction and review of Neuroscience:

  • Organization of brain structure for auditory processing, speech and language production, and memory
  • Update on neuro-imaging and Network theory
  • Brain development and etiologies of speech, language and learning disorders
  • Adolescent brain development

11:00 – 12:30 Auditory Processing Disorders – bottom-up processes

  • Development of the cortical auditory processing machinery
  • Abnormalities in development caused by chronic middle ear infections, noise exposure, and genetic predispositions
  • Interventions – classroom amplification, metacognitive approaches, auditory training

1:30 – 3:00 Memory

  • Type of memory: short term (working memory) vs. long-term
  • Neurology of memory
  • Functional approaches to memory treatment

3:15 – 4:45 TBI in children

  • Neurological mechanisms of head injury
  • Manifestations and progression
  • Mild Traumatic brain injury and post concussion syndrome
  • Interventions

4:45 – 5:00 Conclusion and question/answers
