CAOT Launches New Project for Internationally Educated Occupational Therapists
Here is interesting news (certainly more appealing than herbal diet supplements) from the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) for occupational therapists who plan to practice in Canada.
The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) is pleased to announce the launch of the National Occupational Therapy Examination and Practice Preparation (OTepp) Project – a 27 month initiative in partnership with McMaster University School of Rehabilitation and funded by the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credential Recognition Program.
The focus of the OTepp Program is to assist internationally educated occupational therapists (IEOTs) as they seek to transition into practice in Canada. The project includes a needs assessment process that will assist IEOTs to determine their individual needs.
“The OTepp project will build upon previous work of McMaster University to develop a flexible national curriculum that can be delivered by occupational therapy education programs across Canada.,” says Dr. Claudia von Zweck, Executive Director, CAOT. “Participants will need to achieve an average of 60% on all assignments in order to pass the course upon which successful completion will be recognized by some regulatory bodies towards the completion of currency hours.“

Transitional Review Arrangements for Applicants who have Commenced but not Completed the Stage I and Stage II Assessment Process – FAQs
Here is latest news from the Council of Occupational Therapists Registration Boards (Aust & NZ) Inc:
The office of COTRB has received a large number of enquires from overseas trained occupational therapists who have migrated to Australia following a “suitable” Stage I Desk Top Application but have failed to complete the Stage 2 Practice Audit requirement within the time allowed.
From 1 July 2009 the Council has required these persons, before undertaking a practice audit, to undergo a review of their current ability to meet the assessment requirements.
The current documentation required to accompany an application for review is -
- Current English language proficiency requirements (within the last 2 years)
- Current reference (within preceding 12 months)
- Certificate of Good Standing (if applicable)
The review applies only to persons who do not have an expiry date on their “suitable letter” or wish to apply for a Stage 2 Practice Audit after the expiry date shown on their “suitable letter” has expired.
The OQAC of the Council has reviewed this policy and will accept from 16 February 2010 to 16 February 2011 an English Language test (IELTS or OET) undertaken within a two year period of their “suitable letter” being issued which meets the Council’s requirements. This variation applies only to persons who do not have an expiry date on their “suitable letter” (and wish to undertake a practice audit) and have practised as an occupational therapist in Australia within the past two years. Evidence of practise is required with the review application.
