There certainly is a very interesting range of topics that is being covered for this event. It is great that a multidisciplinary approach to intervention strategies is being employed. And stroke can be prevented, given the right education on warning signs and precautionary lifestyle changes (including maybe the best weight loss product to assist with weight issues), which can definitely make all the difference.

Quezon City, Philippines

Topic — The Big Picture: Children CONNECTING to Life Experiences

How do we decide what behaviors or skills we need to teach? What do we do when a child is already exhibiting a behavior that may be inappropriate or inadequate?

Behaviorism is the examination of human and animal behavior using the principles of science: observation, reproduction, testing, objectivity, etc. Applied behavior analysis, then, is the application of this science of behavior to meet a certain end: to increase or decrease a particular behavior, to improve the quality of a behavior, to stop an old behavior, or teach a new.

Often, our goal isn’t only to teach a new behavior, but rather to replace a behavior that a child is already exhibiting, a behavior that is either inappropriate or inadequate in meeting the child’s needs. To do that, though, we need to analyze the current behavior to determine why the child is using that behavior. We do this through a functional behavior analysis.

This seminar-workshop aims to “connect” the participants’ knowledge and understanding of behavioral strategies to children and their life experiences.

* That is Friday, 28 May 2010 from 12AM to 1AM, Philippine time.

Linda Hodgdon will be interviewing Marianne Bryant, her co-author for the NEW E-book, Practical Communication Tools for Autism: Using Visual Strategies for Lifelong Success. Marianne has lots of delightful stories to tell that really help you understand the power of visual strategies in her family. In this entertaining and informative program they will highlight:

1. Believe that visual strategies work.
2. Become a persistent detective.
3. Get proactive about anticipating what is going to happen.
4. Remember that our children/students may not understand what we think they understand.
5. Make visual tools to create order in the home.
6. Remember – success with visual strategies is often lots of “little things.”
7. Understand that visual tools can (and should) change & morph over time.
8. Use visual strategies to help students successfully handle new, unusual or unique situations without a meltdown or major trauma.
