<p>This year’s convention aims to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Explore the other possible avenues that a physical therapist can practice his/her skills after acquiring their license.</li>
<li>Discuss the opportunities that await the future physical therapists locally and abroad from the perspectives of fellow Filipino physical therapists who have tried working in rehabilitation facilities outside the country and from the employers</li>
<li>Discuss the current status or updates of physical therapy practice in the different fields.</li>
<li>Discuss the present vital issues faced by Filipino physical therapists and the profession.</li>
<li>Provide a venue for Filipino physical therapist coming from the different parts of the archipelago to interact about their sentiments concerning trending issues of the profession in their respective localities that might have a national impact.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>CALL FOR ABSTRACTS</strong><br />
PPTA invites researchers to present their projects at the PPTA 2012 National Convention. Completed undergraduate thesis, faculty-led research, and independent research are welcome. Interested parties are requested to submit their project abstract on or before June 30, 2012 addressed to the Research Presentation Sub-committee head at research2012@philpta.org.</p>

<blockquote><p>This year’s conference aims to promote, first and foremost, acceptance of autism within the family. It seeks to empower families to make informed decisions and to take bolder steps to ensure quality life for their member with autism.</p>
<p>It will also provide a fresh perspective to professionals as collaborative and supportive partners of families in the management of autism.</p>
<p>It will feature interactive web interviews with Dr. Temple Grandin and Dr. Stephen Shore, two of the most famous experts on autism. It will also feature Filipino experts Dr. Alexis L. Reyes, our country’s leading Developmental Pediatrician, Dr. Michael Tan and Dr. Honey Carandang. It will showcase local experiences of parents, siblings and persons with autism as self advocates.</p>
<p>It will also showcase initiatives of the government (Carmona, Cavite) and the private sector “Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)” both in the rural and urban settings to provide programs and services for families and communities facing the challenges of autism.</p>
<p>And finally, the Conference aims to highlight the vital role of the family in developing self advocates Filipino Persons with Autism (PWA).</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Type of sessions</strong></p>
<p>Choose the type of session that best suits your material:</p>
<p><em>Workshops</em> are 3 hours long and should provide comprehensive information, in-depth information about a specific topic. The material should be based on fundamental knowledge or innovative ideas and should reflect in current trends and practice, education and management. The sessions should incorporate a variety of educational methods, such as lecture, demonstrations, and discussions.</p>
<p><em>Short courses</em> are 1 hour long and provide the opportunity to deliver a general overview of a broad topic or more detail on a select topic than would be possible during a paper presentation. They are best delivered using a single education method such as a lecture, and allow for a 15-minute question-and-answer period.</p>
<p><em>Individual papers</em> are 20 minutes long followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer period and provide an arena to report new research, technological advances, programs and techniques.</p>
<p><em>Posters</em> are visual display of new or interesting techniques, programs, or advances in the profession. A cork bulletin board will be provided. Posters should be prepared in advance and should be large enough to be viewed from a distance of 2 meters.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you a clinician working in a developing country in the Asia-Pacific region?  </p>
<p>The Stroke Society of Australia (SSA) is offering for the first time a $6000 grant for a stroke clinician from a developing country (by World Bank criteria) in the region to attend the SSA annual scientific meeting (held in Sydney, 29th &#8211; 31st August 2012). This grant also includes spending a week in one or more of the stroke units in the hosting city or elsewhere, in order to foster the development of stroke medicine in the home country, and to foster linkages between countries. This award will be given to a clinician who expresses an interest in becoming a stroke champion for their country and can demonstrate steps already planned or taken to achieve this goal. </p>

<blockquote><p>Dr Kay Toomey and Dr Erin Ross are returning ‘down under’ in 2012 to present another series of their hugely successful training events for paediatric health professionals.</p>
<p>The SOS Approach to Feeding is a trans-disciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding difficulties and poor growth (birth to 18 years of age), with a particular focus on early intervention in children from 6 months to 6 years of age. This approach integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioural/learning, medical, and nutritional considerations to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding and growth problems.<br />
Registered health professionals who attend the basic training course will be eligible for accreditation to practice this program.</p></blockquote>
<p>Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute (QCMRI) is proud to host the following SOS training events in 2012:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Better late than never&#8230; congratulations to all our newly licensed Filipino physical and occupational therapists! We are proud of you!</p>
<blockquote><p>The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announces that 308 out of 610 passed the Physical Therapists Licensure Examination and 27 out of 72 passed the Occupational Therapists Licensure Examination given by the Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy in the cities of Manila and Cebu this February 2012.</p>
<p>The members of the Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy who gave the licensure examinations are Dr. Reynaldo R. Rey-Matias, Chairman; Raul G. Agustin, Bernadette M. Reyes, Delia R. Pabalan and Rolland Lyle D. Duque, Members.</p>
<p>The results were released in two (2) working days from the last day of examinations.</p>
<p>Registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card (ID) and Certificate of Registration will start on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 but not later than February 29, 2012. Those who will register are required to bring the following: duly accomplished Oath Form or Panunumpa ng Propesyonal, current Community Tax Certificate (cedula), 2 pieces passport size picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 1 piece 1” x 1” picture (colored with white background and complete name tag), 2 sets of metered documentary stamps and 1 short brown envelope with name and profession and to pay the Initial Registration Fee of P600 and Annual Registration Fee of P450 for 2012-2015. Successful examinees should personally register and sign in the Roster of Registered Professionals.</p>
<p>The date and venue for the oathtaking ceremony of the new successful examinees in the said examination will be announced later.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Occupational Therapy Association of the Philippines (OTAP), Inc. is inviting their members to attend Professor Anita Bundy&#8217;s workshop on 22 October 2011 at a discounted rate of P950 (normally P1000). Forty (40) slots have been reserved for the organization. This workshop is just one of the many other workshops to be presented at the Philippines’ First International Festival on Children’s Play at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City on 21-23 October 2011.</p>
<p>For those who are interested to attend the said workshop, you may register from September 28 to October 7, 2011 to avail of the discount. Send a scanned image or photograph of your OTAP ID and indicate your OTAP ID number in the form to verify your membership.</p>
<p><strong>About the Presenter</strong><br />
Anita Bundy is known internationally for her work in occupational therapy assessment and intervention. She has published widely in these areas and given invited lectures and courses on five continents. She is best known for developing theory and research in play with children who have disabilities and in sensory integration. She has a strong interest in the everyday lives of children with disabilities. Currently she is the project leader for a large team of researchers conducting a study in schools examining the benefits of an innovative intervention on physical activity, social skills and self esteem. Professor Bundy also has contributed to the development of assessments in driving; currently she is developing a touch-screen based off-road assessment to predict safe drivers.</p>
