Speaker: Mr. Allen R. Espelita, OTR, OTRP, CVP, CEAS I

Assistive Technology aims to offer the widest range of supports so that the user can make best use of all the features and advantages that technology has to offer. Assistive Technology is any item, whether purchased off the shelf, or customized, which enhances an individual’s independence. Assistive technology works best when a good match is reached between the user and the technology. AT is a tool, a means to an end. It is not an end in itself. This is an important point to remember when you are trying out different types of Assistive Technologies. User-friendliness is a key feature to look out for when you set about trialing new devices, or introducing devices to someone else (Enable Ireland, 2011).

Resources for Educational & Allied Consultancy Habitat (R.E.A.CH.), Inc.
9:00AM – 4:00PM

November 26 – Applied Behavioral Analysis
The principles of ABA have been around for quite some time, and have myriad uses outside the scope of teaching children with autism. ABA can be the basis of programs addressing a broad spectrum of human behaviour, from increasing the productivity of the workplace, to precisely training military personnel, to, indeed, teaching children with special learning needs. Learn the various essential elements of an ABA-based program in this seminar-workshop.

November 27 – Writing SMART IEP
Are you still confused about writing S.M.A.R.T. IEP goals and objectives? This seminar-workshop will equip you to write SMART IEPs that are specific, measurable, use action words, are realistic and relevant, and time-limited. You will learn how to use present levels of performance to write measurable goals and objectives. It’s time to learn about special education law. Come and join this workshop and be a SMART SPED Teacher!

November 28 – Picture Exchange Communication Symbols (PECS)
PECS has a number of advantages over other methods of addressing communication. It is appropriate for individuals who do not use speech or who may speak with limited effectiveness. Those who have articulation or motor planning difficulties, limited communicative partners, lack of initiative in communication, etc.

November 29 – Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH)
This training is intended to introduce professionals to the TEACCH approach to classroom organization, structure, curriculum, and teaching, care, etc. Today, treatment of children with Autism includes use of developmental theories of behaviour and cognition. Mental health professionals and educators achieve behaviour management by using appropriate educational structures. A well-developed program based on community support and public school education can greatly reduce the incidence of severe behaviour problems. The child’s learning and development can best be fostered through special teaching curricula focused on the development of social skills, and through special communications.

November 30 – Best Practices in Teaching Children with Behavioural Disorders
This seminar-workshop will review theory, definitional issues, models, assessment, and instructional methods for educating children with emotional and behavioral disorders. Develop a working knowledge of educational approaches for teaching students with emotional/behavioral disabilities.

The natural history of ischemic stroke survivors is to recover to some extent. The degree of recovery varies greatly among individual stroke patients and among the domains of stroke-related deficits. The underlying processes related to recovery are complex and much has been learned about them. Pharmacological and cell-based therapies to enhance recovery after stroke are under development and many clinical trials have been initiated. The role of therapy-based enhancement of post-stroke recovery is also being explored and expanded. This webinar will discuss these aspects of stroke recovery and enhance knowledge of the participants in this rapidly evolving field.
