Course Objectives
* Understand the key features of sensory defensiveness and how it disrupts occupational performance
* Demonstrate knowledge of clinical strategies for the treatment of sensory defensiveness across a variety of age and disability groups, including developing client awareness, creating a “sensory diet”, and applying a direct treatment approach to various clinical populations.
* Identify symptoms of sensory defensiveness at different ages, using a specialized clinical interview
* Provide direct clinical management for clients being treated for sensory defensiveness
* Have an overview of the emerging psychological and neuroscience theories related to this condition as a basis for further study and research.

31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week

We will be celebrating the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week on July 17-23, 2009. This year’s theme is “31st NDPR Week: Tungo sa Katuparan ng Karapatan ng PWDs.” Quoted below are the objectives of the event as enumerated by the National Council On Disability Affairs (NCDA).

The annual observance of the NDPR Week aims:

  • To stimulate public awareness and support on disability issues and concerns that will strengthen the involvement of the different government and non-government organizations including PWDs themselves and the media;
  • To serve as a vehicle of information for programs being implemented by government agencies including non-government organizations that adhere to the promotion of the welfare of PWDs;
  • To develop and strengthen cooperation among agencies of the government to take active responsibility in uplifting the economic and social condition of the sector of persons with disabilities; and
  • To forge a strong partnership between and among all sectors of the Philippine society for better understanding of disability issues and concerns.

Understanding the Kawa Model

We wrote an earlier article on the Kawa Model almost two years ago. It mainly defined what the model was all about.

We’ve stumbled only recently into an article and video presentation from Advance for OT which presents Michael Iwama, PhD, OTC in a clip where he discusses the development of the Kawa Model, the need for it and its reception thus far.
