Workplace injuries such as repetitive strain injuries (RSI’s) account for 42% of all lost time claims and 50% of all lost time days. To increase awareness on these issues, the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers is pleased to offer the 13th annual RSIPLUS Awareness Day on Wednesday February 29, 2012 at no fee.

With the aid of the eDome at Cambrian College, now anyone can access this year’s RSI Day event regardless of geographic location. Overview
PPTA Cebu Congress 2012 aims to provide a venue to discuss the present significant issues being confronted by the physical therapy profession and its individual professionals regarding regulation, education, service delivery, and professional organization representation. A featured forum aims provide an opportunity for major stakeholders of the physical therapy profession in the country to present their views regarding the future state of profession in the areas of licensure and regulation, undergraduate and post-graduate education, service demand and supply, and professional organization. The program also provides an opportunity for physical therapy research to be presented by local practitioners.

Participants
Jointly organized by PPTA and the three schools of physical therapy in Cebu, it will be the highlight of their joint celebration of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Week. The congress will be attended by students and faculty, aside from being opened to local professionals. Physical therapy schools and practitioners of neighboring provinces are also invited to this whole-day event.

Theme: “Making the Rights Real for Filipinos with Autism”

“Making the Rights Real for Filipinos with Autism” was adopted as the theme for this year’s celebration to give emphasis on the realization of the rights of individuals affected with autism and to support the campaign of the United Nations to give special attention to Persons with Disabilities which comprised 15% of the world’s population according to the 2011 data of the World Health Organization (WHO). Persons with Disabilities are the most vulnerable and marginalized sector of the society.

Three day course Overview:

Day 1

AM
Lecture on TCM Pulse – this is a focus on pulse qualities and there relationship to the organs
-TCM pulse taking is based on distinct palpation of pulse qualities, such as rolling, wiry, taut, etc..
-Objective is to learn how to discern between each of the different pulse qualities in a clinical setting

PM
Practical on meridian palpation and needling
-an acupuncture point has a distinct palpatory experience, this course will teach you how feel a meridian and how to feel both repletion and vacuity at different acupuncture points: this is the best way to find effective acupuncture points rather than just go by text book ideas of point prescription
-needling will be talked about and shown in terms of meridian based acupuncture

Day 2

AM
Lecture on meridian therapy and pulse based on Japanese medicine – this is the pulse and how it relates to the meridians; pulse positions are looked at in greater detail here
-this lecture to will teach how to use the pulse to determine the imbalance in the meridian, for example the determine repletions and vacuities

PM
Root treatment points and needling
-this is an emphasis on picking and treating the right points to balance the patient, called the “root” treatment, if you want to be effective in treating a difficult case this is the real “ancient secret” to success
-some authorities would argue that 80% of the success to acupuncture lies in proficient use of root treatment

Day 3

AM
Lecture integration of pulse taking using both TCM and Japanese
-lets now look at combining both skills of pulse taking for meridian and organ imbalance

Whole Workshop Integration and Case Analysis

This training aims to put together basic treatment together using palpation, needling techniques and root treatment this will again include practical. This whole three day course will teach how to use both traditional theory from ancient Chinese texts such as the Nanjing, SuWen and Lingshu. This is then integrated with the palpatory style of meridian therapy.

The Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine will be holding a Post-Convention Workshop entitled, “ Current Trends on Spinal Manipulation and Stroke Rehabilitation.”

SPEAKERS:
The invited speakers for this workshop are members of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine from Temple University Hospital , Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . They are Dr. Ernesto Cruz and Dr. Michael Weinik.

Dr. Ernesto Cruz is a physical therapy graduate of the University of Santo Tomas who pursued Medicine in UST. He went to the United States and finished his residency training in Rehabilitation Medicine at the Temple University. He is presently an Associate Professor of the Temple University Hospital. His special interests are stroke and geriatric rehabilitation. He will be talking about new exercises for stroke patient.

Dr. Michael Weinik is a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine who went pursued rehabilitation medicine as his specialty. His interests are musculoskeletal rehabilitation and sports medicine rehabilitation. He will be teaching spinal manipulation-basic principle, assessment and treatment

This parallel session will provide allied health professionals a working knowledge of the use of evidence to guide and underpin clinical practice to improve health care provided to patients. Dr. Karen Grimmer-Somers is the Director of the International Centre of Allied Health Evidence (iCAHE)based in the University of South Australia. She has been a leader in Evidence Based Practice(EBP) in allied health and has attracted funding for numerous projects in the area of EBP such as clinical practice guidelines for the Screening, Diagnosis and Management of Glaucoma and Guidelines for the Management of Elbow pain. Ms. Janine Margarita Dizon is currently a PhD scholar at the University of South Australia and works as a research assistant of iCAHE. Her dissertation is the Development, Implementation and Evaluation of an Evidence Based Practice training program in the Philippines. She was the former head of the Center for Research for Movement Science in the University of Santo Tomas. Karen and Janine team teach EBP to groups of allied health professionals at the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and to post graduate students at the University of South Australia.

All health professionals and students of the following disciplines -nurses, medical technologists, pharmacists, physical therapists, x-ray technicians and occupational therapists, will benefit from this parallel session and are therefore encouraged to attend.
