When & Where
August 8, 2010 (Sunday)
Quality Life Discoveries
No. 70 20th Avenue, Project 4
Quezon City, 1109 Philippines

Speaker: Jennifer A.G. Soriano

Life Skills Therapy Center and the Occupational Therapy Association of the Philippines present a one-day, 2 -part seminar on facilitating school participation. This seminar is for teachers (those in regular and special schools), parents, occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists.

I. Facilitating the Development of Pre-school Skills

Child development research indicates that learning and development is most rapid in the preschool years and thus intervention should begin as early as possible to enhance the child’s development, provide support and assistance to the family and to maximize the outcomes for the child and family’s opportunities. This lecture/workshop is designed to assist parents, educators and therapists in their daily interactions with children aged 0-6 years.

At the end of the lecture/workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Identify core skills for each age group between 0-6 years
2. Identify possible red flags as seen in their natural settings
3. Apply specific at-home or child-care center strategies to improve identified areas of concern
4. Have better knowledge on whether there is a need for referral to a qualified professional

Strategies to Facilitate Classroom Participation of Children with Special Needs

The goal of school based therapy is to enhance the learning potential for the handicapped student. We facilitate the inclusion of students with special needs in their educational setting and enhance the student’s potential to access, participate in and benefit from their educational program. Another reason students are referred to OT is handwriting. In this lecture, we can talk about classroom strategies that target improving handwriting without picking up pen and paper. This lecture/workshop is designed to give parents, educators and caregivers ideas on how this can look like in the school setting.

At the end of the lecture/workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Identify specific strategies useful in their own school setting
2. Use given strategies appropriate to their population
3. Use non-paper and pen strategies to improve fine motor skills
4. Reflect on how these strategies could affect their student and measure its effectiveness

Congratulations to all our new board passers! All those late night studying, both through books and computers surely paid off. And those computer reviews must have been also helpful. You got to thank the internet for that, for being able to study and review with colleagues online on your PC’s and laptops.
